The Monsters Lie in Wait

The monsters lie in wait.
The monsters lie and wait.
The monstrous lies,
I wait for them to leave.

The light appalls them; for
When light falls on them, the
Light, it fells them,
For I’ve beheld them
And I tell them…

“Be gone, beyond the dawn
Be gone, stir me no longer”
The monsters bleed to shadow
…for now

For I know
They’ll return
For hopes to dash
And dreams to burn.
It’s how they earn their keep.
It’s safer while I sleep.
So I remain
At rest.

I know that if I brave a glance,
Take a chance, search each creature
For the monstrous features I imagine,
I will fail.
For the monsters are not real.
They’re built upon thoughts and guesses.
Bloated forms of fear and stress
Is all they are.

I know.
I know.
But still they lie in wait.
The lies and liars that they are.
And all that I can do is sit and
Wait.

This moral is not clear.
There is no lesson here.
Your narrator and hero
Are both gone.
It’s just me.

So much for eucatastrophe.
So much for your faith in me.
So much fear,
No fortitude to find.

I wait.
I wait.
I wait.
For dawn.

To be continued…
